Well, I’m from Fukushima seesen’s 4PM class too but I’m going to say something different. I want to introduce you one special kind of doll that originated from Japan.
As you may see my display picture, it is a girl doll. Japanese people call that スーパードルフィー(super dollfie in English.) Super Dollfie(SD) is one kind of Ball-Joint Doll (BJD) that is easy to be posed compared to other dolls. But BJDs are everywhere, why I said this is originated from Japan?
It turned out that this specific style of BJD was first made by one Japan company, Volks, in late 1990s and then later, it became a standard for all kinds of Asian BJDs (includes LUTS, DollMore, AngelRegion…etc) For only about 10 years, people all over the world love those dolls and I’ve even meet someone who owns more than 70 dolls!
You may find tons of photos of SD online but you may also go to stores to see them in real. There is a SD museum at Volks’ headquarter in Kyoto, Japan, called “天使の里” (Tenshi no Sato, Angel’s Home). I know, it’s impossible to fly to Japan just for the dolls, and luckily, there is one in US. In 2005, Volks also opened the first salon in US in Torrance, CA, called “天使のすみか” (Tehshi no Sumuka, Angel’s Nest) that display the standard models of SD and provide the Full Choice System (FCS).
How big is the doll? The girl shown in my picture is a “SD13G” (SD13 indicates the size of doll, G stands for “girl” and shows the type of the doll) doll that is about 22″/58cm height. If it’s said “SD13B”, well, since boys are usually taller than girls, SD13B doll is also taller than SD13G doll. There are also some other size of SD doll that you may find them on Wikipedia or on official site of Volks.
SD dolls are special not just because they are hell expensive but the realistic of the face and body. Although the doll is made of polyurethane resin, it is close to a real person in 1 to 3 ratio and the shape of face is similar to human too. In SD, you will not get a girl like 36-24-36 body which is nearly impossible even in modeling industry.
Just as children give their dolls thoughts when they play with them, SD dolls have their own personalities when they stay with their owners. To me, SD doll is not just a doll, she is part of me. In Doll Party in LA 2007, Mr. Shigeta, the president of Volks, also said, “Super Dollfie is another yourself.” It’s kind old-fashion but I still want to say, “It’s because of Love.” :P
